Timaru speedskater Nicole Begg last night took out the prestigious South Canterbury Sportsperson of the Year award at a gala function at the SBS Events Centre.
Begg was not on hand to personally collect the award as she is based in Switzerland for the European summer.
However, the 19-year-old beat off some top competition to take the crown, up against the likes of three-time winner New Zealand cyclist Marc Ryan and New Zealand bowler Sean O'Neill.
