City athletes Pan-Am bound

July 6, 2007 - Several Mississaugans hope the number 13 will bring them good luck later this month in South America.
Thirteen city athletes are among 470 members of the Canadian team that will compete at the XV Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from July 13 to 29.
The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) officially announced the team, which also features 272 coaches, team leaders and support team members, on Friday.
Mississaugans are well represented across the board in many of the 33 sports being contested among the 5,500 athletes representing 42 countries from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean.
The most experienced and decorated Mississaugan competing is weightlifter Akos Sandor. A seven-time Canadian champion, the 29-year-old Sabaria Weightlifting School member captured gold at both the 2006 and 1998 Commonwealth Games.
Sailor Mike Wolfs is also no stranger to international competition, having won a silver medal at the Summer Olympics in Greece.
This is the second-largest delegation of Canadian athletes at any multi-sport competition. At the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, 618 Canadians competed.
