Roller Skating: Competitors are tops on wheels

While a hockey team has abandoned the Civic Auditorium, a much larger group of skaters will be rolling in Sunday.


That's when the USA Roller Sports National Championships will begin its 22-day run at the arena. The event comes just a few months after the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights announced that the franchise would be relocating to the Quad Cities.

"We're excited about coming to Omaha," USA Roller Sports spokesman Brock Kuester said. "It's a big event and one that we hope people will come out to see."

The competition will be split into two parts. The speed skating portion will be Sunday through July 21, and the figure skating events will be July 22 to Aug. 5.
